Age-Inclusivity Matters: Practical Tips for Professionals Engaging with Older Adults
Dr. Lauren Snedeker, Rutgers University School of Social Work director of the Aging and Health Certificate Program and core faculty member, Hub for Aging Collaboration
Description: In this presentation, we will explore practical tips and strategies for incorporating age-inclusive practices for professionals, with a special focus on older adults. It is essential for professionals and social workers to adapt their approaches to meet the unique needs of older individuals.
This session will provide valuable insights on how to engage older adults effectively, promote dignity and respect, and create inclusive, supportive environments for clients of all ages. Attendees will walk away with actionable tips for building stronger, more empathetic relationships with older adults and ensuring that their practices are both inclusive and empowering.
Resilient Aging in the LGBTQ+ Community: Maintaining Voice and Autonomy
Dr. Jeanne Koller, PhD, MSW
Dr. Paul Urbanski, PhD, MSSW
Description: Throughout their lives LGBTQ+ individuals may experience adversity, discrimination, health disparities, and barriers to care. For LGBTQ+ older adults, additional concerns related to aging, especially in these uncertain times, can be challenging. Additionally, the LGBTQ+ community is diverse (including identities within the LGBTQ+ umbrella), and lived experiences vary greatly. Results from our recently published study focused on transgender and/or nonbinary older adults highlight some unique concerns.
This workshop will primarily focus, though, on resilient aging in the LGBTQ+ community and is appropriate for Center for Modern Aging participants, service care providers, and clinicians.
"Oh, at Your Age—‘Get Over It, Honey!’: Ageism and Its Impact on Healthcare and Healthcare Delivery"
Dr. Arun S. Rao, M.D., AGSF, FACP
In this workshop, Dr. Rao will provide an overview of ageism and its influence on the healthcare environment. He will go over how it presents itself, how it can impact healthcare delivery, and how older adults can advocate for themselves and others.
